Students from public high schools throughout Newark compete in “Newark Idol,” a talent contest that is reminiscent of the highly acclaimed TV show American Idol. Contestants arrive to the venue in stretch limousines and walk down a Hollywood-style red carpet where they have interviews with the press in a designated area. The entire evening is planned to give the students a total feeling of stardom and all of the glamour and visibility that are associated with this type of contest. Conceived and produced by SuSu Stewart in 2003, YOPAT teaches aspiring performers the fundamentals of the entertainment business, “Newark Idol” has been presenting this competition for over ten year in response to popular demand generated by previous year’s successful show. Students from all Newark High Schools participate in qualifying auditions. Newark Idol was organized to provide opportunities for talented, creative students from Newark public high schools who waited on line for the American Idol competition but were unable to enter. We were aware of the wealth of talent in the group and felt these youngsters should have this opportunity to showcase their talents to the public.
